I Tried Mesh Flats Here’s What Actually Worked With Them

After writing about mesh flats, I had to try them myself.

I ordered a few pairs (okay, like five), tried them on with everything in my closet, and quickly realized… not every outfit works with mesh shoes. Some looks felt off. Some felt like I was trying too hard. But a few combinations? Actually kind of amazing.

So if you’re eyeing a pair—or already ordered them and now you’re staring at your closet wondering what to do next—here’s what actually worked with mesh flats (and what didn’t).

Also here are 10 affordable mesh flats that I found on Amazon!

1. Wide-Leg Jeans + Fitted Tank

This combo just makes sense. The volume on bottom pairs perfectly with the minimal, almost barely-there vibe of mesh flats. A fitted tank on top balances the proportions, and the result is something that feels cool, casual, and styled without trying too hard.

2. Midi Skirt + Boxy Tee

Mesh flats with a flowy skirt can go very wrong unless you balance it out. A midi skirt and a slightly oversized tee worked surprisingly well—it felt easy and not overdone. It’s perfect for a casual day out when you want to feel cute but still chill.

3. Tailored Trousers + Simple Tee + Crossbody Bag

This gave “model off-duty, but make it realistic.” The trousers made the mesh flats feel elevated, and the simple tee kept it relaxed. It’s a great outfit for errands, casual work meetings, or when you want to feel a little more polished.

4. Linen Shorts + Open Button-Down

At first I tried pairing mesh flats with stiff denim shorts and it felt off. But soft, flowy linen shorts made a big difference. Worn with a tank and an open button-down, the whole outfit looked effortless and breathable—perfect for hot days when you still want to feel styled.

5. Slip Dress + Lightweight Sweater Tied Over Shoulders

If you’re not sure whether mesh flats can go “elevated,” this combo might change your mind. A neutral pair of mesh flats with a satin or cotton slip dress (and a sweater or button-down thrown over your shoulders) gave me quiet vacation dinner energy in the best way.

What Didn’t Work (And Why):

  • Chunky cargo pants: The bulk didn’t balance with the softness of the shoes.

  • Super cropped denim with ankle ties: It felt like too much going on visually.

  • Mesh flats + tight mini dress: It felt off-balance and unfinished—like the top and bottom were from two totally different vibes.
