What Do These Dress Codes Actually Mean?

Every dress code explained in plain language — what qualifies, what doesn't, and the formula that makes getting dressed easier.

Business Casual

Business Casual

The most misunderstood dress code in existence. Business casual means polished but not formal — think tailored, put-together pieces that wouldn't look out of place in a meeting but don't require a blazer.

Tailored trousers or chinos + a blouse or fitted top A midi dress or wrap dress in a solid or subtle print A blazer over a simple tee and straight-leg pants Loafers, block-heel pumps, or clean white sneakers
Not business casualRipped jeans, flip flops, crop tops, very sheer fabrics, or overly casual graphic tees.
Smart Casual

Smart Casual

Smart casual is one level below business casual — more relaxed, but still intentional. This is real-life dressing done well. Jeans are fine here as long as they're clean and well-fitted.

Dark wash jeans + a nice top + ankle boots or loafers A casual dress with a denim jacket and flat sandals Chinos + a tucked-in linen shirt + clean sneakers A knit midi skirt + simple fitted tee + mules
Not smart casualAthletic wear, very worn-out jeans, hoodies as outerwear, or beach-adjacent pieces.
Office Casual

Office / Casual Friday

Office casual is the dress code that causes the most confusion because it sits between "I tried" and "I put thought into this." The formula: take your usual work outfit and swap one element for something more relaxed.

Tailored trousers + casual knit top (not a blazer) Clean, dark jeans + a structured top + loafers A relaxed but polished midi dress with flats Straight-leg chinos + a linen button-down, untucked
Not office casualLeggings as pants, spaghetti straps, shorts (unless explicitly okayed), or overly casual graphics.
Business Professional

Business Professional

Business professional is the formal end of the work dress code spectrum. This is suit territory — or at minimum, a blazer and matching tailored pieces. It signals authority and preparation.

A tailored suit (matching jacket and trousers or skirt) A structured blazer + dress trousers + a silk blouse A knee-length or midi sheath dress in a solid color Heels, pointed-toe flats, or classic loafers only
Not business professionalJeans, open-toe shoes in conservative settings, overly trendy pieces, or anything above the knee.
Cocktail / Semi-Formal

Cocktail / Semi-Formal

Cocktail attire means dressed up but not black-tie. Think an elevated dress or a polished separates combination. This is the dress code for weddings, holiday parties, and fancy dinners.

A midi or knee-length dress in a rich fabric or color Tailored wide-leg pants + a sleek top + heels A satin slip dress or wrap dress with heeled sandals A jumpsuit in a dressy fabric (silk, velvet, crepe)
Not cocktailOverly casual sundresses, jeans, sneakers, or very casual fabrics like cotton jersey.
Casual

Casual / Dress Casual

Casual doesn't mean anything goes — it means comfortable and personal without looking like you didn't try. The best casual outfits have one "anchor" piece that makes the whole thing feel intentional.

Well-fitted jeans + a nice tee or blouse + clean shoes A casual dress with a cardigan and sandals Joggers or wide-leg pants + a fitted top + loafers Shorts + a tucked-in linen top + platform sandals
Not casualAnything visibly dirty or very worn out, pajama-adjacent pieces in public-facing settings, or no coordination at all.
Occasion Formulas

Simple Formulas for Every Occasion

Use these as a starting point — a reliable base you can build from based on your own style and wardrobe.

01
Work / Office

The Workday Formula

TopBlouse, fitted knit, or structured top
BottomTailored trousers, midi skirt, or sheath dress
LayerBlazer, cardigan, or structured jacket
ShoesLoafers, block heels, or pointed flats

The key to work dressing is proportion. Pair a fitted top with a wide bottom, or a flowy top with a slim bottom — not both loose or both tight at once.

02
Date Night

The Date Night Formula

BaseA dress OR elevated top + pants/skirt
FabricSomething with texture: satin, lace, knit, velvet
ShoesA heel or a sleek flat — nothing too casual
FinishOne statement — bag, earrings, or neckline

Date night doesn't require a micro-mini or anything you're uncomfortable in. Wear something you feel good in and can actually focus on the date while wearing it.

03
Brunch

The Brunch Formula

VibeElevated casual — put-together but not trying too hard
Option AFlowy midi dress + denim jacket + block heels
Option BWide-leg jeans + a fitted top + mules or loafers
Option CA linen co-ord set with flat sandals

Brunch outfits should feel comfortable enough to sit through a long meal but polished enough to look intentional in photos.

04
Job Interview

The Interview Formula

RuleDress one level above the company's dress code
ClassicTailored blazer + trousers + a simple blouse
ModernA structured midi dress in a solid, neutral color
ShoesClosed-toe heels, loafers, or clean pointed flats

For creative industries, you have more room for personality. For finance, law, or medicine — lean traditional and let your interview answers do the talking.

05
Holiday Party

The Holiday Party Formula

Work PartyCocktail dress or polished separates — festive but professional
FriendsGo more fun — sequins, velvet, or a bold color
NYEAnything with sparkle, shine, or drama
ShoesHeels or embellished flats — comfort matters for long nights

Holiday dressing is permission to be more than usual. The formula: take your usual level of dressing and add one festive element — metallics, velvet, or a statement neckline.

06
Weekend Casual

The Elevated Casual Formula

BaseWell-fitted jeans or relaxed trousers
TopA nice tee, fitted tank, or casual blouse
AnchorOne piece that elevates: a good bag, loafers, or a blazer
PrincipleFit > everything. A well-fitting casual outfit beats a sloppy "nice" one.

The "anchor" piece principle: even the most casual outfit can look intentional with one quality piece — a structured bag, great shoes, or a single good layer.
