After Watching NYFW, I Have a Pretty Good Idea What We’ll All Be Wearing Next

A pointed pump beneath a full skirt. A richly textured jacket with jeans. A saturated color that makes an otherwise familiar outfit feel less predictable. The most useful ideas from New York Fashion Week often reveal themselves in these small relationships between clothes.

The September 2026 shows presented Spring/Summer 2027 collections, so this is a look ahead at the runway season with ideas you can adapt for fall now. The shoes, colors, silhouettes and fabrics belong to that specific New York conversation. The styling suggestions below are ways to translate them into everyday outfits, rather than instructions to reproduce a runway look exactly.

What stands out across the collections is how much room there is for contrast. Decorative surfaces sit beside practical clothes. Sharp footwear gives softer shapes an edge. A beautiful jacket can carry an outfit while the pieces underneath remain straightforward. That is a more interesting starting point than trying to replace everything in your closet.

The shoes: sharper toes, small bows and a relaxed alternative

Khaite made a pronounced point of its footwear, showing sharply tapered pumps and heeled sandals. Tory Burch also favored pointed pumps, including styles finished with bows. Together, they make a convincing case for paying attention to the outline of a shoe rather than concentrating only on heel height.

A pointed toe changes the last line of an outfit. Beneath a wide trouser or a skirt with volume, it creates a precise finish instead of adding more visual bulk. For fall, try the principle with a pointed ankle boot under full-length trousers, or a low pump with a skirt that ends above the ankle. A taller heel is optional; the shape does the work.

Bow pumps felt more considered than sugary

At Tory Burch, bows appeared on both woven pumps and more conventional versions. The combination of a small decorative detail and a tapered toe is what makes the idea useful: there is softness without losing definition.

Wear a bow shoe with something less precious. Straight dark jeans, a plain knit and a sharp jacket give it a reason to be there. Pairing bows with every other romantic detail in the wardrobe can make the outfit feel overly coordinated. One is enough.

Flat shoes still had a place beside dressed-up clothes

Proenza Schouler put flat sandals beneath a sequined gown. It was a useful reminder that a decorative outfit does not always require equally elaborate footwear.

In cooler weather, interpret that contrast with a clean flat or streamlined loafer under a fluid skirt. The important detail is how the hem lands. If the fabric pools heavily over the shoe, the outfit can lose its shape. Have the length adjusted for the footwear you actually use.

The colors: give a familiar outfit one unexpected relationship

Tory Burch’s palette included grape, turquoise, coral and marigold, often in lively combinations. The range gave the collection more than one route into color, from cool and saturated to warm and bright.

For an everyday wardrobe, start with the color you already repeat and change its partner. A purple knit can sit against chocolate trousers. A turquoise shirt can brighten charcoal. A coral scarf can interrupt a navy coat. These are styling translations, so there is no need to find an exact runway shade.

The proportion of color matters as much as the colors themselves. Give one shade more space and use the other in a smaller area. A full bright outfit can work, but a colored knit and a narrow flash of a second shade at the neckline are easier to repeat through a normal week.

Diane von Furstenberg, Tommy Hilfiger and Proenza Schouler all appeared in The Zoe Report’s coverage of bolder runway stripes. A graphic pattern can introduce color while keeping the outline of the garment familiar.

Start with a striped top and let one of its quieter colors determine the trousers. A small bag in a contrasting shade can finish the look without adding another competing print. If you already enjoy mixing patterns, vary their scale so they do not fight for the same amount of attention.

The silhouettes: fuller skirts, narrower trousers and length

Khaite’s exaggerated A-line skirts and dresses offered a fuller alternative to its column shapes. The distinction is in where the volume sits: a skirt that opens away from the body changes the relationship between the waist, hem and shoe.

Try a full midi with a fine-gauge knit that ends near the waistband. A shorter jacket lets the skirt’s outline remain visible. The outfit becomes less clear when a bulky top hangs over the widest part of the skirt, so start with a clean upper half before experimenting with more volume.

Slim cropped trousers offered a different proportion

Khaite also showed cropped black skinny trousers. Their presence does not make relaxed trousers obsolete; it adds another way to balance a jacket or a more dramatic top.

For a practical version, look for a narrow trouser that allows comfortable movement and ends cleanly above the shoe. Wear it with a slightly generous jacket, then keep the layer underneath simple. The interest comes from the difference between the two shapes, not from choosing the tightest possible fit.

Long layers looked best with a clear base underneath

Coach’s spring collection paired slouchy tailoring and short tops with very long, light-looking trenches. The repeated vertical line gave the collection a recognizable silhouette.

Take that idea into fall with a long coat worn open over a tucked shirt and straight trousers. Keep enough of the waistband visible to show how the outfit is put together. The coat should move around the base layers rather than conceal every proportion beneath it.

The jackets and coats: let the outer layer have a point of view

Tory Burch explored the car coat with brocade, color, utility details and different treatments of the waist. It is a useful outerwear direction because the familiar shape can support a more expressive surface.

A patterned coat needs less help from the rest of the outfit than you might think. Try a plain crewneck, dark trousers and one restrained accessory. If the coat has a swingy shape, leave room for that movement instead of forcing a heavy belt around it. If it already defines the waist, keep the layers underneath thin enough for that detail to remain visible.

Ralph Lauren paired brocade with white cargo pants and a short velvet jacket with dark boyfriend jeans. Those combinations are a strong example of how a rich fabric can sit within a casual outfit.

This is the jacket idea to try if you own pieces that feel too dressed-up for your usual plans. Put the special jacket over the simplest clothes you have: a plain tee and jeans, or a fine knit and uncomplicated trousers. Keep the shoe clean and the bag relatively quiet. The contrast gives the jacket a life beyond dinners and events.

The practical test is the shoulder and sleeve. A decorative fabric can already have considerable visual weight. Make sure the jacket allows movement and does not require a complicated layer beneath it to feel comfortable.

The fabrics: texture carried the detail

Khaite used sheer tulle with three-dimensional floral appliqué across several garment shapes. That construction is more specific than a general return to lace: the surface has depth, and the pattern can read differently over the layer underneath.

For fall, consider a lace skirt with an opaque slip and a plain knit. Or wear a lace blouse over a close-fitting camisole beneath a blazer. Choose the underlayer intentionally, because its neckline, color and length become part of the outfit. Sheerness works best when it feels planned rather than accidentally revealing.

Brocade, embroidery and velvet gave simple shapes richness

Tory Burch’s embroidered cardigans and decorative jacquards added interest through the fabric itself. The collection also used chenille for knits with a plush appearance, a reminder that visual weight and actual weight are not always the same.

When shopping a textured piece, notice how it behaves as well as how it photographs. A stiff fabric holds volume; a fluid one follows the body. A dense surface can make a compact jacket look substantial, while a softer knit may need a clean trouser to give the outfit definition. You can borrow this approach through one textured layer without assembling an entire embellished look.

Fringe brought movement to the clothes

Fringe appeared across collections including Monse, Luar and Kim Shui. Its effect depends on movement, which makes it a different kind of detail from a static print or a decorative button.

A fringed skirt or scarf is the easiest place to experiment. Keep the surrounding fabrics relatively smooth so the movement remains visible. Check the fringe length when you sit and walk, and avoid piling it beside other details that catch or tangle. The best everyday version should be enjoyable to wear, not something you have to manage all evening.

The denim: the finish became part of the story

Denim offered more than a new leg shape. Simkhai showed wax-coated bootcuts, while PatBo used floral embroidery and beads. These treatments made the surface itself a focal point.

If you are comfortable with the jeans you already wear, this may be a more appealing update than learning an entirely different silhouette. A coated finish adds a little shine; embroidery introduces pattern and texture. Keep the top relatively plain and choose jewelry that does not compete with the detail.

The restraint is in the rest of the outfit. A jean with a strong finish does not also need an elaborate blouse, a heavily embellished bag and a statement shoe. Let one element carry the interest and give it a clean background.

Scarves moved to the waist at labels including Zankov and Ralph Lauren, while Kallmeyer continued the cummerbund conversation. These details changed where the eye stopped on an otherwise continuous outfit.

Try a narrow scarf through trouser loops, or tie one over a simple dress and leave the ends visible. A wider scarf can act as a soft sash, but it needs a fairly clean base so the fabric does not bunch. Move the knot slightly off-center if a front bow feels too formal.
