The Styling Tricks I Use When Nothing Looks Good

Last week, I had one of those mornings.

You know the ones: every outfit felt wrong, every piece in my closet annoyed me, and even my "good" jeans weren’t hitting like they normally do. It wasn’t that I needed more clothes. It was simply me not feeling good in anything I put on.

If you’ve ever stood there surrounded by piles of “maybes” and “absolutely nots,” just know — you’re not alone. Here’s what I actually do when that feeling hits.

I pick one piece I always feel good in.

Not the trendy thing. Not the thing I think I "should" wear.
I grab the piece that always feels right — even if it's boring. Usually it's a fitted tank, a pair of flowy pants, or my favorite midi dress. It gives me something to build on when everything else feels overwhelming.

I build an outfit around comfort first, not cute.

If it feels good on my body, I automatically carry myself differently.
I’ll start with the comfiest base layer (like soft shorts or a romper) and then style up from there with shoes or accessories if I feel like it.
Some days, confidence = cozy.

I swap just one thing.

If something’s feeling off, I don’t change the whole outfit. I just swap one thing:

  • Sneakers instead of slides.

  • Different jeans.

  • Looser top.
Usually, the outfit isn’t the full problem. One tweak is all it needs.

I add one “extra” — even if I don’t feel like it.

If I’m not vibing with anything, I’ll force myself to throw on one fun piece: a cute bag, statement earrings, an oversized button-down tied at the waist.
Even if I don’t feel like it, that extra 10% effort usually snaps me out of my spiral.

I give myself permission to wear something easy.

If it’s a sweats day, it’s a sweats day.
I just pick the matching set, put on cute slides, add gold hoops, and keep it moving.
Trying to force an outfit when you’re not feeling it usually makes it worse.
Easy counts. Effortless counts. You still showed up.

If nobody else said it today: You don’t need a new wardrobe to feel good. You just need a minute, a reset, and sometimes... a really good basic outfit you already love.
