This $9 Nail Tool Is the Only Thing Keeping My Nails Looking Done Between Salon Visits

Keeping your nails looking polished between salon visits is where most routines fall apart. It’s not the manicure itself it’s everything that happens after.

If you’ve ever stretched a gel set past ten days, you already know how quickly things can go left. Chipping, lifting, dry cuticles it doesn’t take much for your nails to start looking undone.

That’s where a solid at-home nail care routine makes all the difference. With the right tools, you can extend your manicure, keep your nails looking clean, and avoid that “I need to book an appointment immediately” feeling.

These are the six nail tools that actually make the biggest impact.

1. The Glass Nail File (~$9) — The One That Started Everything

Glass Nail File with Case

I’d been using drugstore emery boards my entire life without realising they were part of the problem. Emery boards tear the nail edge instead of sealing it, which causes micro-splits and peeling. A glass nail file also called a crystal file seals the edge as it files, which means your polish lasts longer and your nails don’t peel between visits.

This one change extended my gel manicure from ten days to close to fourteen. A good glass file lasts years. Mine has been in my bathroom for two and a half years.

What to look for: Double-sided, tempered glass, comes in a protective case. Brands like Makartt and Bona Fide Beauty are consistently well-reviewed on Amazon.

2. A Cuticle Oil Pen (~$7–10) — The One Your Nails Actually Need Daily

Cuticle oil is not optional nail care. It’s the thing that prevents your gel from lifting at the edges because dry cuticles pull away from the nail and take the polish with them. A pen-style applicator means you can do this at your desk, in the car, wherever. Thirty seconds a day makes a real difference.

What to look for: Jojoba or vitamin E base. Rollerball or brush tip. Sally Hansen and ORLY both make good, affordable options.

3. Press-On Nails (~$8–15) — The One That Replaced Whole Appointments

Press-ons have come an embarrassingly long way since the 90s. The best ones last seven to ten days, look indistinguishable from a salon set in photos, and take about fifteen minutes to apply. I now use these for events and travel instead of booking a salon appointment.

What to look for: Medium to long almond or coffin shapes tend to look the most natural. imPRESS has the best everyday options. Static Nails are worth the step up in price for special occasions.

4. A Four-Way Nail Buffer Block (~$5–8) — The One for Bare Nail Days

On weeks when I’m between gel appointments and not doing press-ons, a four-way buffer turns bare nails from dull to shiny in about three minutes. The four sides move from rough to smooth to a shine finish, and the result looks like a clear topcoat without any polish at all. It’s the cleanest, most low-maintenance nail look I know.

5. Cuticle Remover Gel (~$7) — The One That Replaces Half the Salon Visit

Overgrown cuticles are what make nails look neglected even when they’re polished. A cuticle remover gel applied for thirty to sixty seconds, then gently pushed back handles this at home in a fraction of the time of a salon cuticle treatment. Sally Hansen’s Instant Cuticle Remover is the version I’ve used for years.

6. An At-Home Gel Polish Kit (~$20–35 starter) — The One for When You’re Fully Committed

If you want actual gel nails at home not just maintenance, but the whole thing a starter kit gives you everything you need. Beetles Gel and GAOY are the two Amazon brands with the strongest reviews for home use. The learning curve is real, but once you’ve done it three or four times, you can do a full gel manicure in about forty-five minutes.

Heads up: You’ll need a UV/LED lamp (usually included in starter kits), a base coat, colour, and top coat. The kit pays for itself within two appointments.
