You sat in the chair. You showed the reference photo. The stylist did exactly what you asked. You looked in the mirror and something just wasn’t right but you couldn’t put your finger on what. So you blamed the hair. Or the stylist. Or told yourself certain styles just ‘don’t work on you.’ Sound familiar?

Nine times out of ten, the issue isn’t the stylist, the product, or your hair texture. It’s face shape. The style that looks incredible on your friend or your favorite celebrity might not translate the same way on you not because anything is wrong with you, but because different face structures are flattered by different silhouettes. It’s literally just geometry.

This guide exists to give you that missing piece of information. Once you know your face shape and what works with it, you stop guessing. You walk into the salon (or open up your wig store tab) with actual clarity and you stop leaving disappointed. Every recommendation here is built around the styles Black women actually wear: protective styles, natural textures, sew-ins, wigs, and everything in between.

How To Find Your Face Shape

Pull your hair all the way back use a headband or slick it down. Stand in front of a mirror with good lighting and look at the overall outline of your face. Three questions to ask yourself:

• Is your face wider at the forehead, the jaw, or roughly the same throughout?

• Is your face roughly as long as it is wide, or noticeably longer than wide?

• Is your jawline soft and rounded, angular and defined, or pointed at the chin?

Match your answers to one of the six shapes below. If you’re between two shapes, read both sections your best styles live at the intersection.

01 THE OVAL FACE

A side-by-side comparison of Zendaya with a sleek updo and Beyoncé with voluminous honey-blonde waves, illustrating how different hairstyles complement an oval face shape.

Oval is the most versatile face shape slightly longer than wide, with a gently curved jawline and a forehead just a touch wider than the chin. If this is you, almost every silhouette works beautifully. Zendaya is the perfect reference: she’s gone from long locs to a sleek high puff to short curls and every single look lands. The goal is balance play with length, volume, and texture freely.

Styles That Shine on This Face Shape:

• Knotless braids in any length this is genuinely the sweet spot for oval faces

• High puff or high bun adds height, keeps the silhouette clean

• Long locs or faux locs, especially with volume at the ends

• Silk press or blowout straight styles sit beautifully on this shape

• Box braids with or without a middle part both work

• Afro the rounded shape complements an oval perfectly

• Bangs in any form fringe, curtain, baby bangs: all flattering

• Bob (blunt, tapered, or asymmetric) all work well

• Senegalese twists, passion twists, goddess braids, butterfly locs

Stylist Tip: If you have an oval face and aren’t sure where to start, go with medium-length knotless braids. They frame an oval face like they were designed for it. Add some color honey blonde tips, burgundy ends and you have a signature look with almost no effort.

02 THE ROUND FACE

A side-by-side editorial comparison of Janelle Monáe with a structured gold choker and Lizzo in a vibrant red silk robe, demonstrating how different silhouettes and updos complement a round face shape.

A round face is roughly equal in length and width, with full cheeks and a soft jaw. Janelle Monáe has made a signature out of styles that add height and drama structured top hats, sleek high updos, and sharp silhouettes that draw the eye up. Lizzo, on the other hand, wears every style under the sun and looks incredible every time. Both are the inspiration here: there are styles that are especially flattering on a round face, and then there's just wearing whatever makes you feel amazing.

Styles That Shine on This Face Shape:

• High puff or high ponytail adds vertical height and instantly elongates the face

• Long box braids or knotless braids (past the shoulders) length is your friend

• Middle-parted styles the vertical line down the center elongates beautifully

• Long locs worn down, pulled back, or worn high

• Silk press with length straight and long creates a sleek, defined silhouette

• Sleek bun or top knot height with a clean, polished finish

• Senegalese or Marley twists worn long and loose

• Cornrows pulled flat to the head shows the natural shape of the face

Stylist Tip: A middle part is genuinely a secret weapon here. It creates a clean vertical line right down the center of the face that makes any style look longer and more defined. Middle-parted knotless braids, locs, or a wig with a middle part try it once and you’ll understand why it works.

03 THE SQUARE FACE

A side-by-side comparison of Gabrielle Union in a strapless black textured dress and Lupita Nyong'o, highlighting how soft textures and structured updos complement a strong, square jawline.

A square face has a strong, defined jawline roughly the same width as the forehead, with the face being close to equal in length and width. It’s a powerful, striking shape Gabrielle Union’s jawline is genuinely iconic. Styles with softness, movement, and texture work especially well here because the curves and flow of the hair create a beautiful contrast with the angular structure of the face.

• Soft, curly or wavy styles body waves, loose curls, braid-outs with movement

• Side-parted styles an off-center part adds softness and asymmetry

• Long locs or braids with volume at the crown and softness at the ends

• Curly or kinky twist-out the natural texture plays beautifully off a strong jaw

• Flowing faux locs or loose, wavy sew-in with layers

• Tapered bob shorter in the back, longer toward the front, gently frames the jaw

• Side-swept bangs or soft fringe that break the symmetry at the forehead

• Afro with volume at the top to add height and soften the overall shape

Stylist Tip: A body-wave or loose-curl sew-in is one of the most flattering styles for a square face. The movement and texture create a softness that plays off the strong jaw in the most gorgeous way. Think Gabrielle Union in her wavy looks — the contrast between the structured face and the flowing hair is what makes it work so well.

04 THE HEART FACE

A side-by-side comparison of Halle Bailey with her signature long locs and Rihanna in a voluminous textured brown coat, demonstrating how length and volume balance a heart-shaped face.

A heart-shaped face is widest at the forehead, narrows through the cheekbones, and comes to a delicate, often pointed chin. Think Halle Bailey her wide forehead and narrow chin are textbook heart shape. Her signature long locs are also a perfect example of a style that works beautifully for this face shape: the length and weight draw the eye downward and create balance between the wider top and the narrower bottom of the face.

Styles That Shine on This Face Shape:

• Long locs or faux locs the length and weight balance a narrow chin beautifully

• Long box braids or knotless braids at chin-length or longer

• Side-swept styles draw the eye away from the forehead naturally

• Chin-length bob with volume at the ends adds width right where the chin narrow

• Braid-out or twist-out with volume at the bottom half

• Loose, flowing sew-in with layers that hit at the jaw or below

• Curtain bangs or fringe bangs soften and minimize a wider forehead instantly

• Passion twists or Senegalese twists worn down with a side part

Stylist Tip: Curtain bangs are having a serious moment and they are custom-made for heart-shaped faces. They part in the middle and sweep to the sides, immediately softening the forehead while looking effortlessly chic. Try them on a lace front wig first if you want to test the look before committing — once you see it, you’ll be sold.

05 THE LONG / OBLONG FACE

A side-by-side comparison of Kelly Rowland in a tailored tan blazer and Naomi Campbell, showcasing how horizontal volume and sleek textures provide balance for a long or oblong face shape.

A long or oblong face is noticeably longer than it is wide, with a narrow forehead, cheekbones, and jaw all roughly the same width just stretched vertically. The magic happens with styles that add width and horizontal volume, bringing balance to that length. Kelly Rowland is a beautiful reference here her best looks tend to have body and movement that open up the sides of the face.

Styles That Shine on This Face Shape:

• TWA (Teeny Weeny Afro) one of the most flattering styles for a long face• Natural afro with width at the sides horizontal volume is everything here

• Box braids or knotless braids worn short to medium (shoulder length or shorter)

• Bangs fringe bangs are the power move that visually shortens a long face

• Bob with volume at the sides the width is exactly what this face shape needs

• Cornrows in horizontal patterns the lines going across add visual width

• Curly or kinky wash-and-go with big, wide volume

• Jumbo braids or Marley twists at shoulder length with fullness

Stylist Tip: Bangs might be the single most effective style choice for a long face. A full fringe or curtain bangs create a horizontal line across the forehead that makes the face look shorter and more balanced instantly. If you’ve been curious but not sure try them on a lace front wig first. Seeing it on your own face is always the best convincer.

06 THE DIAMOND FACE

A side-by-side comparison of Teyana Taylor with a textured pixie cut and Chlöe Bailey with voluminous locs gathered at the crown, showcasing how short styles and top-heavy volume highlight the cheekbones of a diamond face shape.

The diamond face is the rarest shape: narrow at the forehead and chin, with the widest point at the cheekbones. It’s angular and striking those cheekbones are the feature. Teyana Taylor’s shaved head moment is the ultimate diamond-face style reference: her cheekbones carried that look with so much power. Styles that highlight the cheekbones and add softness or width at the forehead and chin work beautifully here.

Styles That Shine on This Face Shape:

• Short natural styles TWA, short fro, buzz cut: the cheekbones do the rest

• Pixie cut with texture on top stunning on diamond faces, especially with curls

• Bob with volume at the ends adds fullness at the chin to balance the cheekbones

• Faux hawk or mohawk braid adds height and drama while showcasing the bone structure

• Bangs at the forehead adds width where it’s narrowest and frames the face

• Braids or locs with a puff at the crown adds width at the top

• Side-parted styles with volume on one side creates softness at the temple

• Butterfly locs or passion twists worn with volume at the ends

Stylist Tip: Diamond-faced women can carry short styles in a way that feels genuinely powerful. The strong cheekbones do all the work — you don’t need length to look incredible. If you’ve been sitting on the idea of going short or trying a TWA, your face shape is made for it. Teyana Taylor is the proof.

The Most Important Thing I Can Tell You

Face shape guides are a starting point not a ceiling. Teyana Taylor shaved her head and looked like a work of art. Issa Rae switches her style constantly and owns every single one. Halle Bailey’s locs became part of her identity. None of them were following a chart, and you don’t have to either.

Use this guide to explore options you might not have considered, get inspired by what works beautifully on your structure, and then wear whatever makes you feel most like yourself. Our hair has always been expression, identity, art, and power. A face shape guide is just a small tool in a much bigger story.
