Chicago winters give you plenty of reasons to make plans at home. Once the cold settles in, a movie on the sofa, something good for dinner, and a hot drink can sound considerably more appealing than getting dressed to go back outside. And when you’re spending that much time in your living room, you start noticing what would make those evenings even better.
For me, that’s where the winter home shopping starts. I want a blanket big enough to actually curl up under, softer lighting for the evenings, and a coffee corner that makes an ordinary weekday morning feel a little more enjoyable. Rich greens and warm neutrals are especially tempting this time of year, along with the kinds of pieces that make you want to put your phone down and settle in for a while.
Amazon has plenty of little finds for exactly that mood, but sorting through them takes some patience. Below are 15 worth a closer look, from a forest-green throw for the sofa to lighting, coffee-corner additions, and storage for the blankets that inevitably end up everywhere. Each was under $40 when checked—very good news if your winter wish list also includes new boots and everyone’s holiday gifts.
1. A forest-green throw for the spot you always sit
Amazon
Exclusivo Mezcla Forest Green Throw
$9.49
This is the easiest way to make the sofa look ready for a night in, even if the rest of the room is still doing its summer thing. The leaf-pattern fleece throw brings in a deep green without asking you to commit to a green couch.
2. Corduroy pillow covers instead of entirely new pillows
Amazon
MIULEE Cream White Corduroy Pillow Covers
$6.98
Your cushion inserts do not need to be replaced every time the weather changes. This cream pair adds a ribbed texture beside the green throw.
3. A little lamp that lets the overhead light retire for the evening
Amazon
UCHENTON Small Bedside Table Lamp
$14.97
The small wood-base lamp with a round fabric shade is the kind of update I’d put beside a reading chair before buying more decorations.
4. A Winter Woods candle for the seasonal mood
Amazon
Colonial Candle Winter Woods Candle
$13.76
If you want the room to acknowledge winter without putting a snowflake on every surface, start here.
5. A black candle warmer that can stay out after the holidays
Amazon
LISUNAR Black Candle Warmer Lamp
$39.99
I like that this warmer looks like a small lamp rather than an appliance you have to hide when company comes over. The black shade and wood base work with the rest of this edit, and the height adjusts for different jar candles.
6. A wooden tray to make the coffee table look intentional
Amazon
Hanobe Distressed Round Wooden Tray
$13.99
A remote and a coaster look more considered when they have an actual place to land.
7. Woven coasters that are allowed to be part of the decor
Amazon
ABenkle Woven Coasters with Holder
$7.99
The mixed-brown set is useful enough to leave within reach and quiet enough to work with the other textures here. You get eight coasters and a holder, which is helpful if your household’s idea of returning a coaster is leaving it in another room.
8. A blanket basket for the inevitable sofa overflow
Amazon
KAKAMAY Cotton Rope Blanket Basket
$25.99
One throw draped over the sofa is styling; the other three need somewhere to go. This roomy brown cotton-rope basket has handles and an open top, so putting a blanket away doesn’t become a whole folding ceremony.
9. Sage mugs for a coffee corner you actually use
Amazon
Ava Nord Sage Ash Stoneware Mugs
$28.99
These are for the person who somehow owns twelve mugs and still reaches for the same chipped one. The four-piece Sage Ash set brings a muted green to the kitchen without requiring a matching set of everything else.
10. A textured runner instead of a fully dressed dining table
Amazon
Vitalizart Beige Cream Table Runner
$13.99
A cotton-linen runner makes the table feel finished without making a normal Tuesday dinner look like a photo shoot.
11. Ecru curtains to soften the room’s edges
Amazon
Beige Velvet Curtains Neutral Rod Pocket
$57.99
Curtains can make a room feel less bare even when you haven’t changed a single piece of furniture.
12. A small frame for something more personal than a generic print
Amazon
HAUS AND HUES Walnut Oak Picture Frame
$13.86
Print the photo that has been living in your camera roll and let it have a life on the shelf. The walnut-tone oak frame holds a 5-by-7-inch picture and can stand on a table or hang, so you don’t need a whole gallery wall to use it.
13. A sculptural vase that doesn’t demand a weekly flower budget
Amazon
Cream White Hug Donut Ceramic Vase
$29.99
The connected, rounded shape can hold its own on a shelf even when you haven’t bought flowers. I’d give it a little breathing room rather than surrounding it with six more objects that are all trying to be the interesting one.
14. A waffle-texture bath mat for the room everyone forgets
Amazon
TYUU Khaki Waffle Bath Mat
$14.98
The living room shouldn’t get all the winter attention while the bathroom keeps the same tired mat. This khaki waffle option adds texture in a small space; the listing recommends hand washing or rinsing and avoiding the tumble dryer.
15. A tissue cover for the least glamorous winter essential
Amazon
Sumnacon Beige Tissue Box Cover
$13.99
It’s a small thing, but not looking at a bright cardboard tissue box beside your nice lamp does make a difference. The beige linen-covered holder has a magnetic bottom; measure your tissue box before ordering rather than assuming every cube is the same size.
