I need to be honest: I have never wanted anything from Gucci. I could appreciate the bags, recognize the logo and understand the history—and still keep scrolling. Then Mariah Carey appeared in Gucci’s holiday campaign, and I clicked through to the Butterfly collection. Now I have a problem.
This is not a quiet-luxury collection. Thank God. It is lilac, crystal-covered, butterfly-stamped and committed to being seen. The first thing I thought was Y2K Mariah, specifically the Glitter era: tiny tops, body-skimming dresses, tinted sunglasses and accessories that catch light before you even enter the room.
And that is why it works. Gucci did not simply put Mariah in a holiday campaign and hand her a red dress. The house built a collection around the visual language she has been refining for decades. It feels glamorous, playful and a little excessive—the exact combination that makes a Mariah fashion moment feel like Mariah.

This Collection Understands the Difference Between Y2K and a Costume
A lot of brands reference the early 2000s by throwing rhinestones onto something and calling it nostalgia. This collection is more specific. The crystals are important, but so are the shapes: the fitted jersey, the tiny shoulder bags, the mini lengths, the frameless sunglasses and the slim, sparkling heels. It is the kind of fashion that makes you picture the full outfit, not just the logo.
The butterfly motif matters, too. Gucci describes the collection through Mariah’s signature symbol, which makes the clothes feel connected to her story instead of merely attached to her fame. If you remember the Butterfly album era, Glitter, the low-rise denim, the slip dresses and every pair of tinted sunglasses she wore like they were prescription, you understand the reference immediately.
The Crystal-Printed Jersey Top
This was the first piece that made me stop. The scoop neck, narrow straps, Horsebit shoulder details and allover butterfly print feel like something Mariah would have worn with low-rise jeans in 2001. It is sexy without looking overworked, and the crystals give it the exact amount of stage light.
The Lilac Crystal Mini Dress
This lilac compact-jersey mini is probably the clearest Glitter-era reference in the edit. It is fitted, sleeveless and covered in GG crystals, but the soft color keeps it from feeling harsh. I can already see it with the crystal slides, glossy lips and the biggest hair possible.
The Crystal T-Shirt
I like that the same lilac crystal treatment appears on a T-shirt. It gives you the sparkle without requiring a full evening look, and it would be so good with relaxed denim or a mini skirt. This is how you make logo dressing feel fun again.
The Crystal GG Trench Coat
A crystal-covered GG canvas trench could have been too much. Somehow, the classic shape makes the excess feel intentional. The tiger-head buttons and buckle add another layer of drama, but the sand-and-brown palette keeps it grounded. This is the coat you wear when the entrance is part of the outfit.
The Gucci Aperitivo Crystal Bag
This little shoulder bag is exactly what the collection needs: compact, glittering and meant to be carried at night. The GG canvas is covered in crystals, and the silver chain gives it that early-2000s evening-bag energy. I do not need it to hold my entire life. I need it to hold a phone, lip gloss and the confidence to be late.
The Butterfly Pendant Necklace
This necklace is one of the easiest pieces to understand because it combines a crystal Double G with a crystal butterfly pendant. It is visibly Gucci, but the butterfly makes it unmistakably part of Mariah’s world. I would wear it with a plain tank and let it be the whole point.
The Crystal GG Mini Skirt
The matching mini skirt gives the crystal canvas a younger, more playful shape. I would not wear it with every other sparkling piece at once. Give it a fitted white tee, a pointed heel and one small bag, and let the texture do the work.
The Gossip Crystal Shoulder Bag
The name alone belongs in this collection. The Gossip bag is small, sparkly and a little unserious in the best way. It feels like the bag you would see tucked under an arm in a paparazzi photo from 2003, which is exactly why I like it.
The Bombshell Crystal Slides
Oh, I want these. The sand-and-brown GG canvas, clear crystals and silver-toned stiletto heel make them flashy without abandoning the house codes. At 55 millimeters, the heel is glamorous but not cartoonishly high. These are the shoes that turn jeans and a camisole into an actual look.
The Pink Crystal Mask Sunglasses
These may be the most Mariah item in the entire collection. Frameless pink-and-silver gradient lenses, crystal Interlocking G details and shiny pink temples? That is not merely Y2K-inspired. That is a full diva accessory. I want them badly.
The Starlet Crystal Shoulder Bag
The Starlet bag brings the same crystal GG canvas into a longer, curved silhouette with a Horsebit detail. It feels a little more polished than the tiny evening bags, but it still has the shimmer that makes this collection special. If I were choosing one bag to wear beyond the holidays, this would be in the final two.
Why This Collaboration Deserves My Coins
What Gucci got right is that Mariah is not just the face of Christmas. She has a complete fashion language: butterflies, sparkle, body-conscious silhouettes, towering glamour and accessories that never apologize for being visible. The Butterfly collection respects that language instead of flattening her into a generic holiday celebrity.
I am not pretending these prices are casual. They are Gucci prices. But desire is part of what luxury fashion is supposed to create, and this is the first Gucci collection that has made me imagine the outfit before I imagined the logo.
That is the difference. I do not want these pieces because they are Gucci. I want them because they are so Mariah—and because they remind me of the version of Y2K fashion that was glamorous, feminine, fun and completely committed to the fantasy.
